Coachford AFC Under 13sCoachford enjoys a week of Sporting Achievement

The village of Coachford was celebrating this week as the Under 13 soccer team won the Cork Schoolboys Division 2 league title, Aghabullogue Intermediate Footballers progressed to the fourth round of the championship and the Coachford Cycling club faired very well in the Kanturk three day event. The Killanardrish/Coachford under 13s secured their second league title in two years by securing a 1-1 draw against Avondale. The boys only needed a single point from their two remaining games. The firs of these saw them face a very strong side in the Blackrock based team who themselves were going for promotion. After a very tense and close first 30 minutes both teams had failed to break the deadlock. In the second half Avondale exerted a tremendous amount of pressure on the superb Coachford defense and eventually opened their account with a goal from a beautiful shot from the edge of the box. Coachford responded immediately and came close to equalizing on three occasions before finally finding the back of the net with a superb strike from Luke Casey ten minutes from time. Both sides tried in vain to find a winner in the remaining minutes and when the final whistle blew the Coachford side had been crowned league winners. Celebrations began with parents and friends spilling onto the pitch to celebrate with the players and coaches. The team manager said “ This was a great title to win. Following on from their success in last years under 12 competition, the lads were promoted up two divisions but they have proved that they are well capable of competing at this level. A lot of the boys also play with the under 12 team and certainly coming towards the end of the season fatigue was their biggest challenge. We are looking forward to playing under 14 football in Division one next season but we need more players from the area to come and try for a place on this magnificent team”. Killanardrish/Coachford players come from Coachford, Carrigadrohid, Aghabullogue, Aghinagh, Rylane and Dripsey.   The winning squad were, Tadgh O’Brien Bradley, Conor Dineen, Alan O’Sullivan, Marc Dineen, Jack O Connor, John McMahon, Cathal Crowley, Josh Martin, Adam Murphy,  Shan Lucey, Like Casey, Liam Twohig, Jack Oldham, Arron Doherty, Jack Murphy and Johnny Byrne.

Aghabullogue Footballers defeated Mayfield in the Intermediate Football Championship first round in a great game of football on an excellent pitch in Blarney lAghabullogue GAAast Sunday. Aghabullogue were the better team on the day and their blend of youth and experience proved too much for the city side. Great performances were the order all over the team with Pa Finnegan, John Corkery and Evan O Sullivan standing out. The lads now have a break of over six weeks before the next game. The club’s hurlers are next up on June 1st when they take on Barryroe in Brinny.

Members of the Broomhill Vintage Club at the launch of the MAJOR Gathering at the Coachford Autumn Festival in August. The organisers are inviting all pre 1964 Fordson Major tractors to come to the festival for this MAJOR Gathering.

A MAJOR Gathering Event for Cork Festival

Broomhill Vintage Club, organisers of the Coachford Autumn Festival are hosting a MAJOR Gathering as part of the festival on Sunday August 18th. All owners of Fordson Majors are invited to attend the festival in Coachford Co. Cork.

These iconic tractors produced by Henry Ford & sons in the US, Cork and England brought affordable vehicles to the farmer the same way as Henry Ford did with cars. The New Fordson Major E1A was introduced at the 1951 Smithfield Show, it was in every way a modern tractor. The Major was immensely popular, diesel versions were easy starting, powerful, economical and reliable, to such an extent that by the late 1950’s demand for petrol – vaporising oil tractors was virtually extinct.

The first Fordson Major E1A models were available with 4 cylinder petrol and Vaporising Oil Engines with capacities of 3,260cc and 3,610cc.   The Major and Dexta range of tractors were the last to bear the Fordson Brand Name, they were also the last tractors to be produced at Dagenham, a new purpose factory was built at Basildon for the replacement World-wide 1000 series which replaced the Fordson Major and Dexta in 1964.

Tadgh Murphy Chairman of the Broomhill Vintage Club said, “Our club wanted to be involved in the Gathering and while other events around the country were focusing on bringing people together we wanted to bring vehicles together so we’ve decided to host a MAJOR gathering for our festival. We are inviting all those who have a  Fordson Major tractor to attend our vintage show as part of the Coachford Autumn Festival on August 18th. We are looking forward to having a wide variety of Majors as well as other veteran and Vintage tractors and cars at our annual show. We also  hope that vintage clubs in the UK will make the trip to Coachford this summer for our MAJOR Gathering event.”

The Coachford Autumn Festival is now in its fourth year and is fast becoming one of the ‘must attend’ events of the summer season. For further information contact Tadgh on 087 2426343

Soccer Fixtures for the next week – April 30th 2013

Soccer

The Killanardrish/Coachford under 13 soccer team are on the brink of winning their second league title in as many years. Last years under 12 champions require just one point from their last two games to secure the division 2 title. The first of these two games is on Thursday May 2nd away to Avondale United at 7.00pm. The lads final game is at home in Carrigadrohid on Bank Holiday Monday at 10.30am when they entertain Tramore Athletic. The under 12s have a few more games to play but are unlikely to be dethroned from their top of the table perch however the coaches of the two teams, Paddy Martin and Liam Casey refuse to let thoughts of victory enter theirs or the players minds until it is mathematically impossible for them to be caught. The club’s under 15 team is closing the gap to the league leaders with every game and are now only 3 points behind leaders Carrigtwohill with three games left to play. This Thursday night the Under 15s travel to Carrigaline to play the home team at 7.00pm and they play Midleton away on Bank Holiday Monday at 11.45am.The Premier team have left themselves a huge task to capture the league title. Although having enjoyed a superb 7-2 victory against Greenwood last weekend they now must face formidable opposition this Saturday when they travel to CIT to play Pearse Celtic at 3.00pm. Pearse Celtic are one of three other teams who are Coachford’s main opposition for this seasons title. The other teams are last year’s champions Park United and Killumney United are the other two and  Caochford must play all of them in the race to the finish. We wish all the teams the very best of luck.

Garda Road Traffic Speed Camera Van to be located In Coachford

The area by the GAA pitch is to be the new location for a Garda Speed Camera Van in the coming weeks. Warning signs are being erected on the approach roads and the van will be operating in the location shortly. This development will be welcomed by those who use that area for walking and by parents of children who use the GAA grounds. Some motorists have been travelling at speeds well over the limit in this area in the past and it is hoped that this practice may be a thing of the past.  There is of course, the danger that the Gardai may come to be accused of ‘Heavy Handiness’ with locals who are just above the speed limit. Lets hope that common sense will be used also .Peter Dineen, Chairman of the Community Council said “ While anything that adds to the safety of our children and pedestrians in this area is most welcome, it would be ideal if the same level of interest to road safety was shown by the Road Safety Authority and Cork County Council to repair and rise the footpaths in this area.”.

Wedding Bells

Congratulations to Imelda O’Shea form Coachford and Martin Coughlan from Dripsey who got married last weekend. The couple enjoyed a beautiful day surrounded by their family, friends and neighbours. Imelda, a paramedic with the HSE South Ambulance service met her husband Martin in Coachford through a mutual friend and three years later decided to tie the knot. The wedding party enjoyed a wonderful day and night at the Carrigaline Court Hotel.

Were you never married?

The Festival Committee are busily organising events for this years event. A number of events are penciled in already with lots more to come.  Some of the events planned are a 5k run, a Dog show,  the annual High Nelly run,  the Bachelor of  the festival competition, Tim Riordan ( of Natural Gas) in Concert,  a Country Market, Photographic competition, Funfair,, and Side Shows. “ We’ve had a great three years with the Queen of the Festival competition. There has been some wonderful contestants and terrific winners. However we’ve decided to change it this year so we’re going with a competition for the opposite sex. The Bachelor of the Festival will be run along the same lines as the Queens. We are hoping that business’s and clubs from all over the area will put forward a man who has never been married and willing to be interviewed on stage for a few minutes. It should be a bit of fun and an opportunity to raise some money for local charities,” said Tadgh Murphy.

Soccer Season Reaching an Exciting Climax

Coachford AFC’s two adult and four schoolboys teams have all only a handful of games left in their respective league campaigns. The premier team are on top of the table and if they can win their final few games the Premier A title will be theirs but they have a very tough last few games . This will be a huge achievement for the lads and their coaches, Michael Walsh and Donal Moynihan. The B team had a difficult season but have played some excellent football to make it to mid table in their league. The Under 15s are three points behind the league Leaders with a game in hand and only four games left to play. The under 13s top their league by a single point with also only four games left while the under 12s top their table having remained undefeated all season. The Under 11s have improved with every game they have played and have won the last four in the non competitive league. 2013 could be one of the most successful seasons for the club in years if results go their way in the coming weeks. Club Chairman, Thady Delaney said “ It’s been a great year so far but there is still a lot of football to be played. This year a lot of the teams had great runs in the cup competitions also. We are also continuing to develop our grounds at the Glebe and our new sand based pitch was invaluable during the very wet playing season.”  This weekend the premier team play Greenwood away on Sunday morning at 10.45am and are at home to Blarney Street Athletic on Tuesday evening at 7.00pm. The Under 13s play Buttevant away on Saturday at 2.00pm while the Under 11s entertain Douglas Hall in Carrigadrohid at 12.30pm on the same day.

Killanardrish/Coachford under 11s win

A great win by the Killanardrish/Coachford under 11s today against a very determined Tramore Athletic. The Coachford boys, playing at home, Went a goal up after 15 minutes when Daniel Browne beautifully lobbed the ball over the defenders and goalkeeper. The game was a very tight affair for the remainder of the first half and most of the second half. With ten minutes to go in the game Tramore seemed to be getting the upper hand and the home side defence was coming under some unbelievable pressure. It looked like it was only going to be a matter of time before the city side were going to equalise however the local team refused to give in and in a breaking move and a wonderful combination between Colin McCarthy and Jack Moynihan the lads scored a second goal with only five minutes to play. This was a great display by the lads and a man of the match performance by Darragh Herlihy. Team – Tony Nowlan, Darragh Herlihy, Brian Dineen, Padraig O’Sullivan, Jack Moynihan, Mark Murphy, Brendan Harrington,Colin McCarthy,Sean Buckley and Daniel Browne. Scorers Daniel Browne and Jack Moynihan
