Runners and Riders almost ready

A huge amount of preparation is being put in place for the first ever Tri school race night being held on Saturday March 5th in Coachford GAA Hall. The Race Night in aid of the three National Schools in Aghabullogue Parish promises to be a fantastic night of fun and a chance to enjoy a night at the races surrounded by friends and family. “ Everyone can be a Racehorse owner for the night for only €20 and at the same time help to raise much needed funds for the Aghabullogue Coachford and Rylane national Schools. We will have a full bar and band for this adult only race night. We hope that the after race craic will be just as good as the races itself and we expect dancing to continue well into the night.” Said Martina Casey Secretary of the fundraising committee. Opportunities to advertise in the race booklet are still available and those who wish support the committee’s work should contact Martina on 087 027 10831.

The Aghinagh Comhaltas and the  Coachford Atelier Art Group presented a  €3,055 cheque to Ann O’Mahony of Marymount Hospice Charity  last weekend at a very enjoyable function in O’Callaghan’s Bar from the sale of their very beautiful 2016 art calendar.  The beautiful calendar featured an original piece of art and the calendar was sold in local shops and markets in the area as well as in the Marymount charity shop. The Coachford Flower club  used the opportunity to also make a presentation to the charity from a raffle they held in December. They presented Marymount with a cheque for €500. Following the presentation Aghinagh Comhaltas entertained those present with some wonderful music and singing.

College reach semi Final

Congratulations to the  Coachford College Junior A Camogie team who have qualified for the All Ireland Semi Final by defeating Clare representatives St. Josephs Secondary School Tulla by 2.06 to 1.03 in the Munster Final.

Broomhill AGM

The Broomhill Vintage Club held their Annual General Meeting last week. The meeting was opened by outgoing Chairman and founder, Tadgh Murphy. Club secretary, Peter Dineen presented his report to those present. The finances of the club were laid out by treasurer, Conor O’Riordan. The election of officers then took place. Current Chairman declared that it was his wish to step down so  a new chairperson, Jeremiah O’Sullivan was elected. Tributes to outgoing Chairman, Tadgh Murphy were made. He was thanked for his six years service to the club, his vision on starting and driving the Coachford Autumn Festival and his enthusiasm for the All Ireland Tractor Building competition. “Tadgh was responsible for starting this club and his belief in what we could achieve as a Vintage Club and as a organiser of the Festival have brought us to where we are today. His management of the Tractor Building team has helped to bring three All Ireland titles to the locality, something that no other organisation in the parish can boast of. We as a club and as people are very fortunate to have you as the person who started, built and ensured this club has a very strong foundation going forward” said new chairman, Jeremiah O’Sullivan. The dates were fixed for the Spring Vintage Run and the Autumn Festival. The Vintage Run will take place on Sunday April 17th while the dates for the much anticipated Festival are Thursday August 18th to Sunday  August 21st.

Dripsey ambush 

The Donoughmore Historical Society is hosting a slide show presentation on the East Muskerry volunteers era and the Dripsey Ambush 1921 story at the Community Centre in Stuake on Thursday February 11th next. The show, being presented by Tim O’Brien, will focus on the formation and growth of the Irish Volunteer movement in areas such as Donoughmore, Courtbrack and Inniscarra; the preparation for the ambush; the capture of ten men and the execution of five of them following a court martial at Victoria Barracks in Cork; the construction of a memorial monument at Dripsey and subsequent key commemorations.

Aghinagh Macra are holding a Table Quiz on Friday the 19th of February at The Laine Bar Ballinagree at 8.30pm to raise fund for the club. €20 for a table of 4 and there will be a raffle also on the night. We hope to see you all there a great night is assured.

Congratulations is extended to our Club Secretary Sheila Lynch, on winning the Muskerry Miss Blue Jeans title at The Ploughman Bar Ballinagree on Friday 29th January. Sheila now goes on to represent Muskerry at the National round in Athboy on the June Bank Holiday weekend.
The clubs next meeting takes place on the 14th February at 9pm in The Ploughman Bar Ballinagree. New members always welcome.

Aghabullogue GAA Quiz Team who represented Cork in the All Ireland Scor Quiz

The Aghabullogue GAA Scor na n Óg quiz team came third in the All Ireland Final last weekend. The four team members, Aodhán Healy, Marc Dineen,Tom Long and  Paul Ring   were representing their club and County in the Final of Traith na gCeist  held in Killarney on Saturday. 26 counties competed and Cork were in joint lead with Kerry and Cavan going into round 8. However some difficult music questions proved to be the boys downfall and they finished round 10 with a total score of 76 points out of 80. Cavan were second with a total of 77 marks while the winners, the Spa club from Kerry emerged victorious with a terrific score of 78 points. The quiz team were awarded bronze medals for coming third.

Soccer Fixtures

Killanardrish/Coachford under 15s travel East to Cobh on Saturday to take on Springfield Ramblers at 1.30pm in the league. The adult Premier team, who have yet to play a game in 2016 due to adverse weather are hoping that this weekend will provide an opportunity for them to play their first game of the year when they play Glenthorn Celtic away on Saturday at 2pm

Aghabullogue Celebrate

Aghabullogue GAA celebrated in style last Sunday night when the club honoured their very successful under age teams of 2015.The Camogie players, hurlers and Footballers were all honoured at the Aghabullogue GAA Annual Juvenile medal Presentation. Cork Superstar, Rena Buckley was guest of honour and she spoke of how wonderful it was to see so much success at the club. Aghabullogue GAA also honoured those players who represented the club at County level throughout the year. The club also paid tribute to Willie Barrett who served the club as player, selector, trainer, coach and Chairman down through the years but it was his career as a referee that was praised at last night’s function. He was thanked for his many years service as referee which came to an end in 2015. Pride of place at the club’s event went to the Under 16 hurlers who won every competition that they could in 2015. The lads won the East Region League and Championship and the County League and Championship titles. The club Chairman and team coach, Denis Ring said , “this team were a pleasure to train, they would do whatever was asked of them and then some more. They understood the game but were always willing to learn and the boys  were undefeated in 2015, that is something even Kilkenny couldn’t boast of. Added to this the lads went and won the East Region and County  League football titles. The club is immensely proud of them and their achievements and we look forward to 2016.

Cork Representatives

Aghabullogue GAA will represent Cork in the All Ireland Scór Quiz  on Saturday in Killarney. The team of Tom Long, Aodan Healy, Paul Ring and Marc Dineen will battle it out with other Munster counties to see who will represent the province in the All Ireland Final. The lads from Aghabullogue GAA club made it to the national final last year and are hoping to get there again his time around.

 

Catwalk capers

The Transition Year students of Coachford College held a very successful Fashion Show last weekend in aid of Marymount Hospice. . Over 450 people flocked to see the students and teachers strut their stuff on the catwalk at Coachford College, All the models entered into the spirit of the nigh and showed off the clothes from boutiques and shops form Cork and Macroom. The organisers put on a fabulous show which wouldn’t have looked out of place at the spring displays in Paris, London or New York. MC for the night, Karolyne Dineen kept the show moving along with plenty of good humour and style.

 

Dripsey Table Quiz

A table quiz to raise funds for the Dripsey Defibrillator will be held in the Weigh Inn Bar on this Friday, January 29th at 8.30pm sharp. There will be loads of prizes to be won the night and it promises to be great fun. Get along and raise some money for this life saving equipment.

 

Soccer Fixtures

The Coachford Premier team will play Buttevant under lights on Friday night  in Buttevant in the third round of the AOH Cup. Kickoff is at 7.45pm.Coahford Under 15s travel to Douglas on Saturday to take on Douglas Hall in the league at 11.45am. On Sunday Coachford U17s play the same opposition but this time the game is in Coachford and kickoff is at 2pm.

 

Lotto giveaway

The Coachford AFC lotto  has been won again and the club will be presenting a cheque for €1,000 to Syl and Kathleen Sheehan next Monday night as the lucky couple’s numbers were pulled out of the hat this week.  This is the third winner of the club lotto in the last five weeks. The Coachford AFC Lotto is unique as you only have to match three numbers to come away with the big prize. Tickets for next week’s lotto draw are available in the pubs and shops around the village.

 

Pub for sale

  • The former Breathnach’s Bar and Gala supermarket has come on the market five months after the iconic premises closed its doors. The licensed premises and shop has been put on the market with an asking price of €240,000. Cork auctioneers Behan Irwin & Gosling are handling the sale and can be contacted on 021 4270007. The closure of the Pub and shop left a huge void in the fabric of the community and many people will be happy to see the business open again and operating as a bar , restaurant or shop.
