Dripsey and Rylane serve up a Classic

Rylane and Dripsey National Schools served up a feast of football at yesterday’s Sciath Na Scol Football Final. The only downside of this magnificent match was that there had to be a loser. Both teams gave their all in a pulsating game that was a joy to watch. This was a game for the purists with end to end football played at breakneck speed in dreadful conditions. Dripsey had the upper hand early on and looked to be in control of a nervous Rylane side however once they got their first goal they found their rhythm and the game burst into life . Dripsey attacked from their full back line and  played some superb football up the wings while Rylane made use of their midfield to trouble the Dripsey rearguard. At half time Rylane led on a scoreline of 2.00 to 1.02. The second half started the way the first half ended with rip roaring football.  Rylane secured an early point putting them two up but Dripsey responded almost immediately with a well worked goal to give them the lead again. Both teams traded points and with five minutes to go Rylane equalized and this remained the case as the full time whistle blew and the best game of the Sciath na Scol tournament headed into extra time as the score line read 2.03 each. The first period of extra time again saw both sides give their all and with just three and a half minutes into the game Dripsey were awarded a 14 yard free and Joey Murray O’Sullivan floated the ball over the heads of the packed goal line and into the back of the net. This was the decisive score and Dripsey tapped over another point in the second period of extra time to record a richly deserved Sciath Na Scol title on a scoreline of 3.04 to 2.03. As the final whistle blew there was utter desolation for brave Rylane and tremendous jubilation for the very skillful Dripsey boys and girls. Rylane collected their  runner up medals with dignity as beaten finalists should and Dripsey celebrated their win joyously as champions are entitled to do. Congratulations to both sets of players, their trainers and their teachers. It was a terrific game of football and there is no doubt that many players on both teams will be in a lot more football  finals in the years to come.

Feederfest 2016

River serves up superb Feederfest

p1010226The Inniscarra Reservoir was in excellent condition to host Feederfest Ireland over the last five days. Almost 100 anglers from Ireland, England , Holland and Italy took part in the competition. Coachford village was the base for the visitors and the organisers and the place was awash with fun and craic for the week. O’Callaghan’s  and O’Riordan’s Bars were tremendous hosts and catered for everyone with courtesy, kindness and a real Irish welcome for everyone.  The competition was exciting and went down to the wire on the last day with the result in the balance right up to the last hour of competition. However the eventual winner of the Guinness, Sensas and Jackie Lennox sponsored event was 2014 World Champion Steve Ringer who  bagged  over 52kg of fish over the five days of angling on the river Lee. This was Steve’s first visit back to Coachford and to the Inniscarra Reservoir  since his Gold Medal victory at the World Feeder Championships two years ago and it proved to be a very worthwhile one seeing him bagging over €5,000 in cash and another €5,000 in equipment. Feederfest 2016 was run off superbly by the Inniscarra Lake Tourism Development Ltd and the NCFFI .  The competition was run in a very good humoured fashion and the craic in the pubs and on the river bank throughout the week was greatly enjoyable.

The event brought a very welcome influx of visitors to the Lee Valley Area in the off peak tourism season. The new improved Coachford Greenway is fast becoming the venue of choice for many Irish and overseas anglers and great credit is due to all involved in maintaining this world class amenity.2017 will see the Junior World Feeder Championships and there are many more international events planned for the lake over the coming years. Investment in tourism along the river should be a priority for the area and  upgrading of the facilities must continue on the Greenway. Locals should also be encouraged and supported in catering for visitors to the area  who wish to avail of what  the river can offer and also the huge tourism potential  of the wider Lee Valley area .

A huge crowd attended the final presentation of prizes on Monday night in O’Callaghan’s Bar where the daily prize winners and the overall Feederfest prizes were presented by the sponsors .Music was provided by the always wonderful Aghinagh Comhaltas. p1010234

Congratulations to all the winners and the organisers of Feederfest Ireland 2016.The fish can relax again for a little while or at least until Steve Ringer decides  to pay another visit to Coachford and the Greenway!

Worst Regional Road in Cork gets a bit of tar

Road resurfacing works are to be carried out on the R619 from the Village  to John’s Cross between August 8th and 19th.This resurfacing  work is very welcome as this regional road is a very poor state of repair. Due to these works , the road will be closed  during this time and Cork County Council have advised that traffic use the alternative routes through Cannons Cross and Cloghroe and on to Creans Cross.” while we are delighted that something is finally being done to make travelling on this stretch of road more bearable it is nothing near what was promised in 1975 when plans were announced for the whole road to be straightened and realigned. We had made representations to the local county Councillors in March and met with Councillors,Michael Creed, Gobnait MRoad resurfacingoynihan and Bob Ryan in June on this issue and many others around the parish .We continue to press our local Councillors and national politicians on various items that effect our communities.”, said Maighread Ní Mhurchú O’Buachalla,Chairperson, ACR Community Council. Maighread also asked that those avoiding the upcoming roadworks and using local and byroads to do so  that you exercise care on the narrow roads and for those living along these roads to be aware that there will probably be extra traffic on these  roads for the 11 or 12 days of the roadworks.

The Community Council are also advising that works on the replacing of water main pipes in the Magourney area of Coachford Village are due to begin in  August following site investigation works.

Nice guy wins Soccer LottoLotto

Local nice guy and avid card player, Concubhar Lucey won the €6000 Jackpot in this week’s Coachford AFC Lotto. The jackpot had been rolling over for a number of weeks and interest in the clubs main vehicle for raising funds was at fever pitch as the numbers were drawn at a packed O’Callaghan’s Bar last Monday night. “ while we would have loved to see it growing for a few more months we got a good run out of this jackpot and we’ll start again next week with €1,000 .Everyone was delighted to see Concubhar winning. It couldn’t go to a more deserving man. He buys a number of tickets each week and is stuck in a few syndicates. He is extremely lucky as this is the third time in 12 months that he has been involved in a jackpot .We don’t see him at many Soccer matches but  with his run of luck we’d be hoping that he would turn up at a few and  be our lucky Mascot for the upcoming 2016/17 season.. Concubhar  is great for supporting the lotto every week and in fact he is a great supporter of all charity events. I wouldn’t be surprised if  the local festival might benefit greatly from his latest windfall”, said soccer club official Joe King Lee.

Jack Lynchs CortinaJack’s Back in Coachford

Coachford renews its connection with Taoiseach Jack Lynch at this year’s Autumn Festival. The mid Cork Village was the scene of a huge Fianna Fail Rally in the run up to the 1977 General Election and provided the ‘Real’ Taoiseach with one of the best turnouts  of the famous campaign and gave Jack a massive vote of confidence as his party romped home to an overall majority. Now 39 years later the village will once again turn out to pay homage to Cork’s most famous son as they welcome the Taoiseach’s Mark II Cortina as part of the 50th birthday celebrations of this remarkable car. The Cortina, in pristine condition is  being brought to the 7th Annual Coachford Autumn Festival’s Vintage & Classic Car and Tractor show by the West Cork Vintage Club who are now the proud  owners and caretakers of this iconic vehicle. The White Cortina will be just one of the many beautiful and well looked after cars and tractors on display on Sunday August 21st. The Festival organisers, Broomhill Vintage Club, are also celebrating the 70th  and 50th anniversaries of the introduction to Ireland of the Zetor  and John Deere tractors.  The Coachford Vintage Show is now one of the biggest in the county and  is  fast becoming one of the most exciting shows to be at. There is a huge amount of space available to the exhibitors and facilities at the expansive GAA grounds in Coachford are second to none. “We are all very excited  about this year’s show and festival. We are expecting a wonderful  variety of vehicles this year and everyone is looking  forward to seeing Jack Lynch’s car, I’m old enough to remember the fantastic occasion when the Taoiseach visited the village in 1977 and crowds of all political persuasion turned out to witness one of the great Leaders of our time at the height of his popularity. We’re hoping similar numbers turn up for our festival on Sunday August 21st to  not only  to see Jack’s car but the many other wonderful things that we have on offer throughout the packed day., said  Festival Secretary, Peter Dineen. Proceeds of the Coachford Autumn Festival will be donated to Marymount Hospice and local Charities.

Small Wives neededwife carrying

If you are a married woman, small in stature but with a big heart and who wouldn’t mind climbing onto your husband’s or even someone’s else’s husband back, then you are needed in Coachford on August 21st to take part in the ‘Wife Carrying’ contest.. This is the first ever time that such an event is being held at the ever popular Festival and it promises to be one of the highlights of the Sunday’s activities. Wife Carrying is very popular in the Nordic countries and while there has been competitions in various parts of Ireland this is the first time it has been officially tried in Coachford. Apparently there are a variety of ways that the wife can be carried along the race track and it is entirely up to the pair how they go about it.. “ I think it could be great fun as most of the lads around here have trouble carrying themselves  not to mind a wife on their backs. Already you can see some of the lads in the pub eyeing up the women and trying to figure out what the weigh and if they would agree to be their package on Sunday August 21st. It would remind you of Macroom Mart on a Saturday” said local publican, Pat O’ Riordan. All the proceeds of this year’s Festival will go to Marymount Hospice, Suicide Aware and local Charities.

 Wife Carrying Rules

  1. The team completing the course in the fastest time wins  the Grand Prize.
  2. Teams will consist of two members, one “Wife” and one “Husband”. For the purpose of this contest, the Wife shall be the contestant being carried, and the Husband will be the contestant doing the carrying, regardless of the actual marital status or gender.
  3. Partners in the contest do not have to be married – as stated in the Wife Carrying Contest Official Rules -“a contestant may carry his own wife, his neighbour’s wife, or someone found ‘further afield’”.
  4. Both the contestants must be 18 years or older
  5. The wife must weigh a minimum of 100 lbs (45 kg). Wives that are too light will have to have an extra helping of Swedish meatballs or carry weights to meet the minimum requirement. In the case that an extra meal in the food tent does not bring the contestant to the minimum weight they will still have to carry weights.
  6. Dropping your wife or falling will incur a 10 second penalty in the contest, and perhaps additional penalties from your ‘wife” after the race.
  7. Husbands may carry their wives any way they choose, however it must be by their own power – no foreign object (like wheelbarrows or harnesses) will be allowed.
  8. Protests must be made within 5 minutes of the end of the contest. There will be a protest fee, and administration fee… as well as an inconvenience fee.
  9. All contestants must wear pants and a smile, and wives must wear a helmet. Other articles of clothing may be substituted for pants, but smiling and having fun are non-negotiable.
  10. Inflatable wives will be disqualified.

Coachford athlete turns Silver to Gold

Coachford athlete, Olive Loughnane received her World Championship Gold Medal on Wednesday,  seven years after competing in the 20km walk finals in Berlin in 2009. Olive finished second in that race and stood on the podium in Berlin  to receive her silver medal however as time passed it was discovered that the Russian athlete, Olga Kaniskina who won gold was one of the athletes who was implicated in the IAAFs anti-doping crack down and was subsequently  disqualified. This meant that Olive was the rightful winner and in a ceremony at the European Athletic Championships in Amsterdam on Wednesday the IAAF president, Sebastian Coe presented the long overdue medal to Olive. This now means that Olive will become the country’s fourth world champion, joining an elite club comprising of Eamonn Coughlan, Sonia O’Sullivan and fellow walker Heffernan. Well done Olive

Electric Bike race

Mick Walsh and Humphrey ‘Fred’ Lynch presenting the cheque for the proceeds of their bike race to Cait and Marie from the Friends of Marymount Hospice

First ever electric bike race

A novel and new type of race took place in Rylane last week as two local characters Humphrey (Fred) Lynch and Mike Walsh came up with a novel fund raising idea.

Since both gentlemen are presently not interested in driving they decided to race each other on their electric bikes and in the process raise funds for Marymount Hospice..
The race stared at O’Callaghans bar Coachford and the finishing line was to be Freds Bar Rylane via Aghavrin and Aghabullogue.

Fred got off to a blinding start with his bike on full charge and his super fast legs adding to the speed of his vehicle as he headed for Mullinhassig Waterfall. The race looked to be his although Mick Walsh was not letting him get too far ahead. As they neared the village of Aghabullogue it was necessary for both to make a much deserved and badly wanted pit stop at Cremin’s Bar to check the vehicles, perform safety checks and execute some necessary top ups for the arduous journey onwards towards Rylane.

The last leg of the trip was undocumented for the most part as one of the party in the lead car could not be extracted from Cremins in a timely manner. However as both approached the lovely village of Rylane with crowds lining the route it was plain to see that Mick Walsh was in the lead by about four or five bike lengths with Fred doing everything in his power to try and close the gap but the finish line came too soon for Fred and it was Mick that was declared the first ever winner of the Coachford –  Rylane Electric Classic.

This novel bike race raised €1600 and the cheque presentation took place in Freds Bar, Rylane on Sunday 26th June with music on the night by Deora Ceol.

The ‘Man in Black’ comes to townJohnny Cash

Footballers win

The Aghabullogue Intermediate Footballers advanced to the 3rd round of the Cork intermediate Championship last weekend defeating Adrigole  in round 2B. The boys were under pressure in the first half but pulled away  after half time with John Corkery scoring two goals and Matthew Bradley and Evan o Sullivan adding vital scores at the right time to see the Muskerry boys safely through. The boys now turn their minds to hurling as they get ready to face last year’s junior champions, Dungourney next Saturday at 4pm in Church Road, Blackrock. This will be a tough game for the boys considering the short turnaround from last Saturday’s game and the fact that Aghabullogue have a growing injury crisis. We wish them the very best of luck.

Feile 2016

Well done to the Aghabullogue Under 14 footballers who played in this year’s Feile Peil 2016. The boys, although placed in a grade above what they should be in by the organisers, gave a good account of themselves throughout the competition. They battled hard for a victory in every game they played in and never gave up. Many of the lads made friends with boys from Corofin from Co.Clare who stayed in their homes over the weekend.
