Village at risk of contracting

The lack of a proper sewerage treatment plant for Coachford is holding back development and putting the very future of the village at risk according to the members of the outgoing Community Council. Speaking at the last meeting of the council, Mr Peter Dineen  said “ There are people crying out for houses in Coachford, people who have grown up here now want to settle down in or near the village but houses to purchased or rent are at a premium.  We are receiving weekly requests  from people who are working in Ballincollig and Cork looking for houses to rent and buy in Coachford. We missed the boom of the Celtic Tiger and now the village is not growing and in fact in some areas of business contracting. Irish Water and the Cork County Council must get their act together to ensure Coachford is high on the list for development in a number of areas. Services must be put in place so that houses can be built and families can move in to the area to boost our schools and businesses. Irish Water’s plans for the new treatment plant are not in the 2014-2016 time frame and we are calling on our TDs and councillors to put pressure on the new body to move Coachford into their immediate plans before it’s too late for our village”.

Holy Communion

five School children from Rylane National School will receive Holy Communion  for the first time on Saturday, 9 May in St. Olan’s Church Rylane. Children From Coachford will receive theirs on Saturday 16 May and Aghabullogue children will have theirs the following Saturday 23 May.

Aghabullogue advance

The Intermediate footballers of Aghabullogue advanced to the fourth round of the Cork County Intermediate football championship  after defeating Mitchelstown in a thriller of a game played in Mallow last Saturday. The boys were the underdogs going into the match having suffered defeat to the North Cork team last year by 5 points. Aghabulloge battled hard all day to see off the very fancied  Mitchelstown side. There were some very fine performances put in by all the players on this young Aghabullogue team. The boys now have a few months off to prepare for the next round and to plan a return to the county final that they last reached two years ago.
Youth Soccer awards

Killinardrish/Coachford schoolboys soccer club recently held their Easter draw and medal presentation night in O’Riordans Bar Coachford. The draw was most successful and brought in much needed funds for the club. Liam Casey in his address on the night thanked all those who sponsored prizes for the draw, all those who sold the tickets and stressed his thanks to the public who continually support their fundraising efforts so generously and also Pat O’Riordan for hosting the event..

With respect to the medal presentation to the successful U13 Div 1 champions from 2014 he relived the pivotal game last season which he felt had spurned the boys on to the title. It was against Buttevant away and it was a game which they had to get something from as they went into it a point behind Buttevant and both with four games left. As always against Buttevant it was a tough uncompromising game and when they went 1-0 down with ten minutes left it looked like curtains but when the managers made some substitutions and brought Tadhg O’Brien-Bradley out of goals and put Ardghal O Buachalla in, they began to exert more pressure on their opponents but were vulnerable on the break. It was from one of those breaks that Ardghal made a brilliant save and from the resultant break upfield, we won a free kick on the right hand side of the box. Tadhg floated it in and it was half headed clear to the edge of the box where our substitute Josh Grimes volleyed home to the back of the net. It was a knockout blow to Buttevant who fell away for their remaining games and our boys went on to win all of theirs to win the title and become the youngest squad in the clubs history to be promoted to premier grade level. .As well  as congratulating the squad as a whole Liam also went on to praise the efforts of some individuals within the squad who were part of the Cork Schoolboys League squad who won Munster and All Ireland medals aU13. Adam Murphy and Luke Casey continue to be part of the  Cork schoolboys representative team this season at U14 grade and are currently on a tour to Germany, Belgium and Holland  as part of their build  up to the Kennedy cup finals in Limerick in June. He wished them all the best as well as Cialan O’Sullivan who is part of this years Cork U13 squad. At the end of the medal presentation the player of the year was announced. This was voted for by the players and coaches in secret ballot and after a tight vote Adam Murphy was chosen.

Bulls Eyes for O Riordan’s

O Riordan’s Bar claimed the bragging rights in the village and a place in the Muskerry  Darts league semi-final having defeated neighbours Breathnach’s Bar  in the second leg of the Coachford derby in Breathnach’s Bar last weekend. The home team had a 4-3 lead going in the 2nd leg and got off to a fantastic start and won the first two games to open up the gap by three games. Captain of O Riordan’s bar Derry (Geff) O Connell then called a time out to try and rally his team. Whatever he said it had an immediate effect as his team won  the next three games in a row to draw the sides level at 6-6. Breathnachs were clearly rattled but much to their credit they dug in to win the next game and only needed to win the last game for overall victory. O Riordan’s showed huge courage to take the last game to force a sudden death play-off. Paddy Martin (Breathnachs)  was up against local double Glazing installer, John Riordan (O Riordan’s) in the decider and John pounced on  a ‘window’ of opportunity to win the game set and match for what was a memorable night for all involved. The underdogs celebrated well into the night while Breathnach’s were left to lick their wounds and to wonder where it all went wrong. Ger ‘the Cockney’ Carey said “we’re devastated, we knew the lads would come with a good game but after going up 6-3 we were sure we’d win handy. This is a huge blow to us. We now have to endure months of slagging from the boys up the street and there is even talk that a few of our team are already looking to transfer  to O’Riordan’s. Pat O Riordan, team manager of O’Riordan’s Bar was delighted with his team and said, “this was a great victory for us but it was also a great competition between the two pubs and played in a very friendly manner. It shows that when we get together in Coachford and organise events with a bit of imagination customers will come and support them. We now look forward to the semi-final but whatever happens we feel we have won the match of the year and also the biggest prize.”

Double Tops

The second leg of the quarter Final of the Muskerry Darts League takes place in Breathnach’s Bar on Friday night from 9pm. The hosts carry a 4-3 lead into the second leg having bounced back from being 3-1 one down early on in last Friday night’s contest in O’Riordan’s Bar Coachford. Both team managers were very confident during the week. Mary O’Sullivan of Breathnach’s Bar feels that home venue and support will suit the main street team, “the heat was cruel in O’Riordan’s Bar last week and our players are not used to that level of heating, I never saw so much coal on a fire. The sandwiches provided were tasty but our players are more used to hot food so we weren’t surprised that we struggled to begin with. Our main player Ger Carey should be fighting fit again this week and we are confident that he won’t play as bad as he did last time out.” Team Captain of O’Riordan’s Derry ‘Geoff’ O’Connell said that although we faltered towards the end we are looking forward to the second leg and heading downtown to the home of the champions and red hot favourites, Breathnach’s.  We are very envious of their highly trained team of semi professionals and internationally recognised players like Carey, the Martins and Casey but we’ll do our best to defeat them this time out.”
