The CEO of Barnardos, Mr. Fergus Finlay paid a visit to Coachford National School last Thursday to speak to the children and to accept a very kind donation of € ??? that the children raised for the Children’s Charity by a sponsored walk on the Coachford Greenway. Mr Finlay spoke to the children about the work that Barnardos do  with children all over Ireland. He went on to say that  Barnardos works to change children’s lives for the better every single day.and that a good education is vital in making poorer children’s lives better.A  number of children then asked the former Government adviser some questions on politics and on his work with the Children’s charity. Mr Finlay replied speaking about his wish that the cost of going to school for all families but especially those who may be struggling financially could be reduced, he hoped that in the future more funds would be directed to schools and that the welfare of children would be higher up in every governments policies. Mr Finlay then was treated to some fabulous entertainment by the children of the school which included, plays, songs and poetry. The cheque was then presented to the charity and Mr Finlay assured all the pupils that it would do a tremendous amount of good especially in the run up to Christmas.

Coachford College win Camogie Title

Coachford College Cork Colleges Junior A Champs 2016Coachford College Win Camogie Title

Coachford College were worthy victors in their tussle with Colaiste Na Toirbhirte, Bandon in theCork Colleges Junior A camogie championship Final replay last Wednesday at a windswept Coachford venue. Coachford beat Mount Mercy and Coláiste Choilm whilst Bandon accounted for Charleville en route to the final, with Coachford coming from a twelve point deficit in Bandon GAA before the mid term to draw the match. The home team started well with a converted free from Cliona Healy after good approach work from Julie Tarrant and Captain Marie O’ Reilly. Bandon responded immediately when Chloe O’ Leary delivered a long pass to Maedhbh O’ Donovan who pointed from the wing. Maeve Lynch then converted a free, having been unceremoniously stopped bearing down on goal by the resilient Ciara Ring. Zerica Griffin gained possession from the resultant puck out and Ciara O’ Sullivan dispatched the ball past Ciara Twomey to put 4 points between the sides. Donovan added another and the warning bells were ringing for the Muskerry school. Rachel McElroy was being dominated by impressive Bandon full Back Sarah O’ Sullivan but an astute switch to the corner yielded a better return for the Muskerry side. Coachford responded with Lauren Moynihan latching onto a Ciara Sheehan clearance and, leaving Keelin Barrett in her wake, scored a valuable point. McElroy caught the resultant puck out and was fouled en route to goal, Cliona Healy converting the point to leave two points the deficit.

Katie McCarthy, easily the best player on view, was a dominant force at the back for Coachford and found wing forward Jenny Burke in irrepressible form with accurate clearances to that wing. Corner back Leah Dineen found herself following corner forward Niamh Collins outfield which left space behind, exploited by Kate Wall when she scored from a difficult angle. Lynch converted a 45 with Chloe O’ Leary, Sinead O’ Sullivan and Aoife O’ Sullivan beginning to contribute to the Carberry school’s dominance. Tara Clifford won possession on the forty and deftly released Ciara McCarthy who flicked the sliotar over the bar, Ellen Tarrant hooked Bandon defender Siobhán Kelleher and Lauren Moynihan snapped up another point. Referee Andy Larkin last action of the half was to award a free to Cliona Healy, on the receiving end of some persistent fouling when running at the Bandon defence; a booking for a Bandon defender and converted point for Coachford the outcome to leavethe score 1-5 to 0-6 in favour of Coach Sinead White’s Bandon side.

At the resumption, Coachford midfielder Marie O’ Reilly gained possession and delivered a cross field pass to McCarthy who eluded two defenders before clattering into Aoife Buckley – referee Larkin correctly awarding a free for the barging infringement. Indeed, a feature of the game was the manner in which the Referee consistently explained all fouls to players from both sides which made for a fabulous contest. Sarah O’ Sullivan scored two frees for Bandon with Ciara McCarthy reciprocating with a long range strike on the run to put a goal between the sides. Katie McCarthy, Ella Foley and Marguerite Lyons all applied pressure on the Bandon puck out and when McCarthy delivered yet another incisive pass to Moynihan, the Cork U14 star floated past two defenders to bury the ball past Orla Dineen. Bandon responded immediately when Niamh Collins found Sarah O’ Sullivan who finished well to the Coachford net. Cliona Healy converted a 45 and, with six minutes remaining, elected to take a point from a close in free when Jenny Burke had been upended.

Both teams were displaying great determination but the Bandon girls spurned two opportunities to finish the game when Sarah O’ Sullivan, on the fourteen having rounded her defender, had her point blank shot stopped by brave keeper Ciara Twomey. Sullivan gathered the rebound but the next shot was blocked by Miriam Cotter in a magnificent piece of skill and anticipation. Bandon missed the 45 with four minutes to play, Twomey found Healy with the puck out but she was fouled on her 65m line. A quick thinking Katie McCarthy delivery found the injured Ciara McCarthy goal side of her marker and her ferocious ground pull rattled the Bandon net for a match winning score. Coachford held out to gain victory in what all agreed was a spectacular contest. Coachford seniors have also qualified for the Cork Colleges final and anticipate a physical encounter with favourites St. Mary’s Charleville.

Coachford: Ciara Twomey, Leah Dineen, Ciara Ring, Miriam Cotter, Julie Tarrant, Katie McCarthy, Ciara Sheehan, Cliona Healy [0-5], Marie O’ Reilly [C], Jenny Burke, Tara Clifford, Ciara McCarthy [0-2], Rachel McElroy, Ellen Tarrant, Lauren Moynihan [1-2], Ella Browne, Julie Verling, Karen Dennehy, Sophie McCarthy, Callie McCarthy, Ella Foley, Marguerite Lyons, Kate Sheehan, Laura Barrett, Aideen Buckley.

Under 16s win again

Aghabullogue under 16 hurlers have added the East Region A League title to their county Championship title by defeating Killeagh/St.Itas  last weekend by two points. The boys lifted the title in after a hard fought game and for times looked to be struggling after enduring a very long season in both Football and hurling. The team must now face Ballygiblin in the County league final this weekend. Unusually  Aghabullogue wore the blue and white of Cill na Martra for this final and it was strange to see the jerseys of a football club being worn at a hurling final. However some of the team do play their football with the Gaeltacht club so at least they felt right at home. There is no doubt however that the title win will be recorded as one for Aghabullogue and not Cill na Martra  It will be interesting to see what jerseys will adorn the players next weekend.

Proprietor Pat O’Riordan explained that Celine Mangan was the owner of the historic pub in the late 1960s, “The bar has seen several owners since including Lissons, Stouts and O’ Shaughnessy’s. and we took it over ten years ago. We didn’t expect that anything would be underneath the timber and it was a nice surprise to see the old name there. Loads of our current customers remember Celine behind the bar and many people have been taking photographs of the exterior over the last few days.. It has prompted great discussion and reminiscing about the owners of this bar and all the bars in the village down through the years.”

Coachford Public Meeting

Michael Creed TD will host a public meeting in Coachford GAA hall on Thursday October 1st at 8.30pm. The Macroom based Dail Deputy  is keen to hear people’s views and ideas on how Coachford can be better, what next steps should be made in securing the economic recovery and how everyone can make the government more responsive to the needs of rural communities. Everyone with an interest in securing the future of Coachford and its environs is invited to the meeting. Deputy Creed said” Politics is a two way street, come along and get involved. I’m here to represent you and I’m looking forward to hearing people’s views and how we can work together to ensure the future of Coachford and the Lee Valley. There has been much fiction about this Governments record in rural Ireland. The facts betray the myths.”

Huge gains for tidy towns

Coachford Tidy Towns gained 25 points in the 2015  year’s competition. This was the highest jump since the group first entered the competition four years ago and sees a real improvement by the hard working committee. Big gains were achieved in litter control, approach roads and the built environment and streetscape. The appearance of the Coachford Childcare Centre, Coachford national Scholl  and Coachford College received positive remarks. Dairygold Co-Op, O’Callaghan’s Bar, O’Riordan’s Bar were commended for their floral displays.  Cooney’s Garage, the Grotto and the old church and graveyard also received special mention. The welcome to Coachford sign and Boat near O’Donovan Engineering were also praised in the report. The small plaques describing the Cooper and his trade was described as a wonderful feature. The work carried out making the old Carpet shop received a lot of praise as did the committees work on the approach roads and planting. Commenting on the judging, Chairperson of Coachford Tidy Towns, Martha McCaffery said,” We are delighted with this year’s score and the judges remarks. A lot of what we did  was noticed by the adjudicator and we are thrilled that the work that the Foróige club carried out with us on Brosnan’s caught their eye. The work that the local businesses and schools put into making their premises more presentable was appreciated by the judges and they must be thanked for their efforts.  Michael O’Riordan’s work on the Cooper signs  and the homeowners in Knockanowen shows what individuals can do to make their  own homes interesting and beautiful and we would encourage everyone to do a little bit more to make our village even more beautiful and tidy. It is disappointing to lose marks due to careless spraying of herbicide but we hope to address that over the next 12 months. We realise that although receiving this high mark that we still have a lot of work to do in many areas of the village but this is a great boost to us and we look forward to continuing on and trying to make the village more presentable and a nicer cleaner and more environmentally area to live in.”  The full report and marks can be viewed at http://www.tidytowns.ie/u_reports/2015 in the Cork West category.

Aghabullogue survive

Aghabullogue will be playing Intermediate hurling again next year having defeated Barryroe in the relegation playoff final last Sunday in Brinny on a score of 2-11 to 1-11. The game was far from a classic but was close at times and the result was in the balance right up to the final whistle. The win means that once again Aghabullogue will be one of the few clubs who will have both a football and hurling team in the intermediate grade. Meanwhile Dripsey continue to prepare for the County Intermediate Final on Sunday October 25th. The Village is festooned with blue and red flags and buntings and the area is full of excitement in advance of the eagerly awaited game.
