Triple all Ireland Title for Coachford

Congratulations to the Broomhill Tractor Builders from Coachford Co. Cork who have won the All Ireland Ferguson 20 Tractor Building title for the third time. The competition held at the national Ploughing Championships saw the team of John Joe Dennehy, Greg Cronin, Danny Martin and Bobby Roche beat off strong opposition from Donegal , Galway, Cavan  and Sligo teams to win the title for the third time in five years.  The lads built the tractor from scratch in a time of 7 minutes and 37 seconds.  Team manager, Tadgh Murphy said “ we are absolutely thrilled to win the title again this year. The lads trained hard for this event and have been putting in 3 to 4 hour sessions three nights a week in perfecting the build.  It was great building in front of such a huge crowd and the cork contingent here at the ploughing really got behind us.” The team will be presented with their trophies at a function in Coachford in the coming weeks.

The County Council are also using this opportunity to lay an additional drainage pipe on the Centra side of the street to help alleviate the flooding of the village. PRO of the ACR Community Council, Doug Lucey said, “This work is very welcome and should certainly improve the appearance of the village. The additional drainage works is badly needed but there is a lot more work to be done in the village and on the outskirts to sort out the flooding and we hope that this can be addressed in the near future. There will be some disruption during these works so we are asking people be patient and slow down while the road works are underway.”

Garda camera van angers motorists

A lot of motorists are being caught speeding at the GAA pitch in Coachford by the Garda Mobile Safety Camera Van.  The 50km an hour speed zone is being strictly enforced from both directions at all hours of the day and night. Reports of motorists being caught at midnight and at 7.00am are just some of the times being recounted by angry motorists who are claiming having a van in this location at times when there are no pedestrians in the area is liking shooting fish in a barrel and that this is only a money making exercise and has nothing to do with road safety. Peter Dineen, Chairman of the Community Council said “ Pedestrians use this stretch of road as part of a walking route in daylight hours and we have asked the Cork County Council to make it safer for pedestrians by repairing the footpath but despite numerous requests, nothing has been done. We have also asked the council to put in place Traffic Calming measures near the GAA pitch as there are a lot of children crossing the road during the GAA Season. We would much prefer if the road was made safer by the Road Safety Authority and the County Council rather than having the camera van there at all hours of the day and night. The road remains very popular with pedestrians and children are still very active around the GAA grounds so we would ask that motorists drive within the speed limit.”

Intermediate Hurlers survive

The Aghabullogue Intermediate Hurlers will be playing in the Intermediate Hurling grade in 2014 having survived the relegation final against Dromina last weekend. In a tight but poor game of hurling the Mid Cork side emerged victorious by five points and were the better team throughout the sixty minutes. There were some fine performances from Denis O’ Leary, Mark O’Flynn, John Buckley and John Corkery.

Under 16s lose final but gain admirers

Well done to the Aghabullogue Under 16 footballers for their unbelievable display on last Monday night in the East Region under 16 B championship final. The boys were losing to a superb Cill na Martra side by 6 goals and 9 points to 4 points at half time. However Aghabullogue never gave up or dropped their heads although they could have been forgiven for doing so. Instead they came out in the second half determined to win the final 30 minutes and they did. The boys in green and white scored a massive 2 goals and 9 points to Cill na Martra’s 1 goal and 2 points. Aghabullogue may have went home without the trophy but they can certainly hold their heads high for the way they set about their task and the way they dealt with such a formidable team as Cill na Martra.

Under 14s win thriller

The Under 14 Killanardrish/Coachford schoolboys soccer team took part in a thrilling football match last Sunday in Coachford when they defeated Fermoy  7- 4 in their second league game of the season. Fermoy aided by a strong wind went three goals up within 30 minutes and looked to be well on top however just before half time the home team pulled one back and ended the half 2 goals down. At the start of the second half the management team of Paddy Martin and Liam Casey made some switches to get the benefit of the favourable wind and immediately started to reap the benefits. The boys had pulled a goal back almost immediately but Fermoy were not giving up their lead easily and scored again to go two ahead. Coachford however battled hard and scored two goals in quick succession to equalize with 15 minutes remaining. Two minutes later they pulled forward with another goal and with three minutes left scored two more to but the game beyond reach for Fermoy and secured all three points. The under 13s also won at the weekend by beating Blarney4-1 however the under 12s lost in their firs outing of the season to Carrigaline by 2- 0.

Aghabullogue may have went home without the trophy but they can certainly hold their heads high for the way they set about their task and the way they dealt with such a formidable team as Cill na Martra. The boys from the west were great footballers, skillful in every area, brave, tenacious and committed and it is easy to see how they were so successful during the last few years in underage football in the region, what is difficult to understand is why their club and ‘Rebel Óg’ insisted that they play in the B grade  this year. What or who were Cill na Marta afraid of? There is no doubt they will win the Under 16 B county title this year . There is no doubt that will again pick up at least two trophies in the B grade again this year but at what cost to their players. These fine footballers from Cill na Martra are good enough for the A grade, in fact they could well win the A title but their club officials thought it was better for them to be guaranteed to win something in a lower division than to try and challenge them to aim for something higher, something greater. Their decision has done a great injustice to those young men. In years to come when the players look back at the great team they were part of, they may well regret the fact that they could have achieved so much more but for the short sightedness and fears of their mentors and officials. Broomhill Vintage Club presented the proceeds of their Coachford Autumn Festival to five charities last weekend.  Due to the huge support of the festival’s sponsors, participants, supporters, visitors and stewards the club found themselves to be in the wonderful position of being able to donate €7,000 to charity. Suicide Aware were the main benefactors receiving €2,500. Coachford Tidy Towns were given €1,500 and the local Care of the Aged, St. Olan’s Conference of St. Vincent De Paul and Macroom Community Hospital received €1,000 each. Festival secretary, Peter Dineen said that “We are hugely indebted to our sponsors and to all those who supported the festival. Without your help we could not run the event and be in this position to donate €7,000 to all these very worthwhile causes. “   In accepting the donation, Dhaiti O’Donobhain from Suicide Aware thanked Broomhill Vintage club and said “this very generous donation will be put to good use in promoting positive mental health and helping those who may be going through times in dealing with issues in their lives.”

Explore Coachford College

Parents are welcome to join a 40 minute tour at 10amor 11am and refreshments are available. Top Class

The College’s leaving Certificate class of 2013 achieved far above the national average in their CAO points. Approx 50% of the students achieved over 400 points compared to only 33.7% nationally while approx 20% of Coachford College students scored over 500 points compared with 9.7% nationally. This was a great success for the school and students and further shows the high quality of this facility.

Coachford gets tidier

The 2013 results for the National Tidy Towns competition saw Coachford gain eight points on the previous year’s results. The Village was praised for the Litter control, Landscaping and general tidiness and for the appearance of many of the business premises. Chairman of the committee, John McCaffery said “while there is no doubt that we are moving in the right direction there is a huge body of work still to be done. We jumped 8 points this year which is great but we are still coming from a very low base and are operating with a tiny number of people for such a large village. Our goal for the next two years is to get over 200 marks, we are currently on 192. The projects that we undertook this year were recognised by the judges and that was encouraging and we have a lot more ideas and plans that we want to implement over the coming years. Onwards and upwards.”

Under 16 footballers reach final

Aghabullogue Under 16 footballers have reached the East Region B football Final having beaten Ballinhassig in the Semi Final last week. The boys will, however face strong opposition from tournament favourites, Cill na Martra in the final. The Gaeltacht side were last years county Under 15 champions and have been scoring goals at will in this year’s championship. Trainer of the Aghabullogue team, John Hogan said  “We are all looking forward to the final, the lads have trained well since the semi final. It isn’t that often you get to play finals and we will give it our best shot to come home with the trophy. There is no arguing that we are the underdogs but a final is a final and you’d never know what could happen”. The final is fixed for Monday September 16th at 6.15pm in Kilmurry. On this Saturday evening in Mourneabbey Aghabulllogue’s Intermediate hurlers take on Dromina in a must win Intermediate hurling relegation final.

John Longs Poem

Many were asking for the poem that John Long recited as his party piece for the Bachelor of the Festival. Here it is:

In Johnnys Dreams!’

By Johnny Long and Pat MurrayJohn Long

1

I’m just a normal guy, just as plain as one can be,

My family are average folk, that’ll how I turned out to be.

I go to work each day, do my bit and collect my pay,

But in the night I dread the bed, these dreams won’t go away!

2

For in my dreams I’m dressed, in a g string and  a bow,

There are chickens dressed in garter belts, oh feck boys here we go!

One pretty lady’s getting bootylicious on my lap.

But God forbid I touch it or she’ll land me with a slap!

3

So like I said I’m just a guy, as lonesome as can be,

But I think my problems started, from a fall when I was three.

My uncle Pat and Auntie Sadie, dropped me on the head,

And now I dream of Hippos, riding naked in my bed!

4

Shur, I’d love to have a girlfriend, but it just never works out,

When I tell them of my fantasies, they scream and roar and shout.

Jesus Johnny you’re a physco, and a pervert and a shit,

So sorry my dearest darling, but could you grow some bigger tits!

5

I guess this is my lot in life, If you can’t beat them you must join,

guess at least they’re only dreams, and they don’t cost a dime.

So if at night you hear me, dreaming loudly in my sleep,

Just think that lucky buggers shagging strippers in his sleep.

6

Someday I’d love to marry, settle down and find a wife,

know these dreams and fantasies, will not improve my life.

So ladies if you see me, hanging out in Riordans bar,

Don’t be scared, I’m only Johnny, could be your lucky star!!!!

Our Summer of 2013

summer

It looks like its over, this glorious summer of 2013. In early Spring we feared the worse with constant rain and bitter cold but then it started…… a few good days to begin with and promises from Donegal fishermen and New Zealand forecasters that we could be in for something special and boy were they right.

We rushed out in the early days to soak up this precious sun, afraid it would disappear quickly like it did in so many other years..but this year was to be different, the sun and heat stayed  and stayed and stayed and pretty soon we got used to it. We were able to plan things, outdoor parties, BBQs, trips to the beach, the parks, the river banks. And it got hot, really hot. Tar began to melt, Irish people burned, sun cream and smooches were the biggest sellers in Coachford. dog in waterCar parking became an issue at the Inniscarra boating centre as people and their pets did everything to cool down.We even found it hard to sleep in warm bedrooms at night. It reminded us of our sun holidays in Spain and Portugal but now in 2013 we were having better weather than those countries. We found we had nothing to talk about, nothing to complain about, the weather forecasts bulletins were shorter and of course we had the usual whiners ” ah feck it, it’s too hot”, “it’s not natural”,” we’ll pay for it in the winter”.  We didn’t care.

swimming in the lakeWe were having a ball. Everyone was in good form, kids were enjoying their best summer ever while we were comparing it to the long hot ones we remembered from our youth. The leaving cert students found it hard to study in this constant sunshine but it made it easier to celebrate their escape from a school that they had outgrown. The procession was baked in June sun and so were those in holy communion and clerical costumes. The Cul camp was hot, hot hot. The child of Prague statues were almost redundant in their role of bringing good weather for the many summer weddings or maybe these statues were responsible for it all along! Farmers raced around as usual collecting silage fearful that this would not last. Bouncy Castles and Gazebos were seen in almost every garden. Cider and Prosecco were the drinks of choice. Al fresco dining became the norm and each and every glorious day was to be welcomed, embraced and enjoyed.

A thunderstorm in mid July brought fears that fresher (windy and colder!!!) weather may be on the way but it never materialised and we didn’t want it. We’d put up with the muggy nights, the hot cars, the crowds at the beach, the poor fashion sense of the socks and sandal brigade, the constant BBQ burned sausages and undercooked chicken drumsticks and the “I’m thirsty” children. We’d put up with all of that but please please don’t take away the sunshine.

Our summer of 2013 seemed to go on forever. water fightFrom the sun grabbing days of May and June to the almost acceptance of ‘this is normal’ July and to ‘it surely can’t last’ of August to the unbelievable early days of blackberry picking September. Of course there was the odd day when it dared to rain but this wake up call only reminded us of how lucky we were to be wallowing in this Mediterranean heat on an island in the north Atlantic in this summer of 2013. But those rainy days will be long forgotten in years to come as we recount this summer to our children and grand children and no doubt it will be exaggerated. We’ll tell tales of four long months of searing temperatures, of tyres melting and metal buckling under the heat of 2013.

Autumn SunAnd now as the nights are getting cooler and smoke rises from the chimneys all around us, as we order in heating oil and bags of coal once more, let us remember the summer, the craic, the fun, the friends, the laughter of the children and the warmth of the sun on our faces and look forward to 2014 and the hopes of another good one.

Coachford Turns Red for the Weekend

 cork

The Village of Coachford is decked out in red in support of the Cork hurlers in their efforts to bring the Liam McCarthy Cup back to leeside. Most of the shops and pubs have Cork Jerseys in their windows and red and white bunting adorns the main street and outside the GAA complex. Some of the pubs are putting on music after the final so that those who are unable to travel to Croke Park will be able to celebrate well into the night when the rebels emerge victorious after 70 minutes. Tickets are of course at a premium and a large crowd gathered to witness the draw for the 36 precious stand and Hill 16 tickets offered by Aghabullogue GAA last Sunday night. Those members names who were lucky enough to be drawn out were busily arranging travel plans to the capital while the disappointed ones (and there were many) continue to scour the countryside for the ever elusive entry pass to Croker.

News from the Village 29.08.13

Photo: Well done to all involved in the Heritage talks yesterday, especially Anthony Greene who gave us all an insight in to those brave men who are interred in the Graveyard behind the old church of Ireland church near the National School. These men who fought all over the world and settled back here in our area. It was also fascinating to find out about the families who built the great houses in the area like the Godfreys, The Goods, The Pynes and the Crooks.Graveyard Stories

The ACR Heritage group marked national heritage week by hosting a very entertaining and informative talk on those that are interred in the two old Graveyards in Coachford. The talk, given by local historian, Anthony Greene touched on the once great families in the area from 1600s to the early 20th century. Anthony described how these families were responsible for many of the great houses in the area. He also spoke on the infamous Dr. Crosse and the poisoning of his wife who is interred in the old cemetery in Magourney. The talk in the Church of Ireland graveyard was on the military exploits of the many distinguished army personnel that are interred there. Many of these men had received the Military Cross and other honours fighting for the Empire across the globe. A large crowd was in attendance to hear of the rise and fall of the famous families of the area such as the Pyne, Good, Crook and Godfrey families. They listened with interest to the history of the people who were responsible for the growth of Coachford village and surrounding areas during the last 400 years.

The Coachford Primary and Post Primary schools reopened this week and the students returning had mixed feelings. Some were delighted to go back and meet their friends again after three long summer months while others wanted this year’s glorious summer holiday to last for another few weeks. Over 90 students have enrolled at Coachford Community College this year and they began exploring the school and learning about their teachers last Tuesday. The college has now over 560 pupils and is seen as being one of the best second level schools ion the county.  Thank You        AUTUMN_FESTIVAL__SUNDAY 427

The organisers of the Coachford Autumn Festival would like to thank everyone who supported the festival this year. Broomhiil Vintage Club chairman, Tadgh Murphy said, “We believe it was our best festival so far. We would like to thank those who attended the events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We hope that families went home happy from the Festival on Sunday, that the runners and walkers were happy with the run on Friday evening and that those who attended the dog show, open air Ceilí and Bachelor competition were glad they did so.. We will continue to try and improve the festival and continue to try and make it something the whole community can be proud of. To run a festival over three days takes a huge amount of help and involvement from a lot of people. We would like to thank all those who took part in the various events; the bakers, photographers, high nelly cyclists, runners and walkers, Agri Olympians, bachelors, musicians, footballers, babies, mummies and grannies, tractor builders, vehicle owners, model toy display builders ,dog owners, set dancers, egg throwers, and children. We would of course like to especially thank those who helped as stewards, ticket sellers, those who registered the runners, sponsored the festival, put up bachelors, and supported us in any other way. The festival is a huge community effort and only the support of so many in the community makes it possible. We would like to thank Aghabullogue GAA for their superb support and co operation, Padraig Donoghue and Dairygold for the use of their properties. We would also like to thank the residents of the village and surrounding areas for their patience and understanding for any disruption that the festival may have caused. We hope to announce how much money was raised for charity in the next few weeks. We are looking forward to 2014 already and ideas and suggestions on how to improve the festival are always welcome.”
