World Championships destined for Coachford.

The World Feeder Fishing Championships 2014 has finally been sanctioned forInniscarra Lake, Coachford and will be held on the 19th & 20th July 2014.

After 20 months of extremely hard work the Inniscarra Lake Tourism Development Ltd finally got a letter of offer for their development grant in November from Avondhu Blackwater Partnership so they can now develop a 2.8km stretch of shoreline on the lake near Rooves Bridge as a Multi-Purpose Amenity and which will also enable the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (NCFFI) to host the World Feeder Fishing Championships 2014. Work is expected to start on site in early January 2014 and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete.

Chairman of the group, Matt Sheehan said “We believe that this development is the single biggest investment into the future of the area in years. The economic benefit to Coachford and the region of this World championship alone is estimated at €2 million. We are delighted that we can now start work and that the funding for the project has come through.”

The eyes of the angling world are now firmly on Coachford and many Countries are already booking their accommodation and making plans to get to the region next July. In fact some of them have already been scouting the area during the year and more will visit prior the event itself.

The tourism potential from this World Championship alone could be a huge boost for the area where up to 25 Countries as far away as South Africa and Russia will participate with at least eight persons with each County for this one event. The event will be covered by a number of TV stations as well as print and online media and the beauty of the Lee Valley region could be seen by thousands of potential visitors. This part of County Cork will be showcased to the world of angling next year and everyone should get involved to do their utmost to deliver a fantastic event for all the visitors.

Deirdre O’Donovan, Chairperson of the Community Council said “This is really great news and we are looking forward to seeing the completed project. This development will be a shot in the arm for all the communities along the river and we hope that it will bring huge numbers of people to the area who want to fish the river, stay locally and spend locally. I want to congratulate the committee on getting the championships to the area. They worked hard, believed in what they were doing and never gave up on it. ”

Flags Fly for Football Final

After a long season and countless training sessions Aghabullogue Intermediate footballers have qualified for the Cork County Intermediate Football final. The boys have beaten Mayfield, Youghal and Glanworth to reach the decider on Sunday when they will face Grenagh in Pairc Ui Rinn in the final at 2.00pm. Aghabullogue played superb football last Sunday to defeat Glanworth in Mallow. The boys had to dig deep after finding themselves 1.03 down after five minutes gone on the clock. But they steadied themselves and set about controlling the game. They began to pick off a few points and get their confidence back. The boys played some beautiful football, scored some lovely points and gave Glanworth very few scoring opportunities and when the whistle blew for full time Aghabullogue had done more than enough to get to the final. As soon as the game ended the club committee set about the task of preparing for next Sunday. Flags and bunting were purchased and the villages of Coachford, Aghabullogue and Rylane were decked out in the green and white during the last few days.  Team selector and club treasurer John Tarrant was delighted after the game, “we were confident that the boys would put it up to Glanworth and although going behind by so much early in the game was worrying we knew what the lads were capable of and when they started playing football they showed everyone what good footballers they are. Grenagh will be different opposition and we will have to be even better and more focussed to have any chance against our divisional foes. This season has been a long one but we are thrilled to be playing in the final. That was our goal all year; this is one of the reasons why we get involved in the game, to be playing in finals. It’s great for the team, for football, for the club and for the parish. Due to a lot of  the older lads working overseas our team is made up of a lot of young footballers but they are playing like seasoned campaigners and it’s great to see that. Sunday is going to be a great occasion for everyone involved with the team and the club and although we are well aware that Grenagh will be over whelming favourites, we have every intention of doing our best to win the title”. We wish the players, their selectors; John Tarrant, Alan Buckley, Tom Gillespie and the trainer/coach Cathal Cronin the very best for the final.
