Coachford Celebrates Gold Medal
The Village of Coachford was buzzing with the exciting news that local resident, Olive Loughnane’s silver medal triumph in Berlin in 2009 is to be upgraded to Gold following the disqualification of the Russian Athlete, Olga Kaniskina for performance enhancing drug violations. Coachford celebrated Olives fine performance in 2009 and organised a welcome home party for the athlete. In 2012 to mark her involvement in the London Olympics a statue in honour of Olive was erected in the village. John Hogan, member of the Community Council and organiser of the 2009 welcoming Home event said “ We are all thrilled for Olive and her Husband Martin and family on this excellent turn of events. Olive was always special to us here in Coachford and we are all immensely proud of all her achievements. We have all witnessed Olive putting in hour after hour of intensive training on the roads around Coachford when she was preparing for the world, European and Olympic Games and we now feel that this Gold Medal win is the least she deserves. Olive is a fantastic Community person and is always on hand to speak to Children and adults about staying fit and healthy and preparing for the big sporting events in their lives. Olive will be presenting the medals to the young Camogie players this weekend. She is a member of the organising Committee for the Coachford 5 mile Road race every August, She is an officer on the School’s Parent’s Association and is taking part in and supporting the Operation Transformation walks in the village at the moment. Olive has always been Gold to us here in Coachford. We may now have to erect another Statue for our World Champion.”
