Jelletts or Gillettes?

In recent years I have become aware that the students attending Coachford College spend lovely glorious sunny afternoons on the riverbank in Coachford. These days of freedom are usually around Summer exams and end of school time or at weekends. The road to the riverbank is often filled with laughter, craic and anticipation of spending some good times together with friends.

Time on the riverbank is spent talking and laughing, getting to know each other, (some really getting to know each other very well !.) and generally just being teenagers. Where there is water of course there is also danger, but thankfully most seem to treat the river with the respect it deserves.

When I was growing up in the village we spend many wonderful days down here on the bank and as I grew older the place was always one which friends and I visited on a regular basis. The difference between then and now is the name. I and many of my age group know it as ‘Jelletts’ but I have seen and heard the young of today refer to the idyllic River Lee bay as ‘Gillettes’.

When I heard this first I thought some one had made a simple mistake and it was an isolated incident of miss pronunciation but no, it’s rife among the students of Coachford College both current and past. Gillette’s ? where did this come from? have the shaving products firm come on board as a sponsor of  Irish river banks? is it to do with that company’s logo, (‘the best a man can get’) and that link with the young boys who go to the river in the hope that this might refer to them in their quest for love.

Can I indulge myself on this blog by pointing out the reason we call this section of the beautiful riverbank ‘Jelletts’, or ‘Miss Jelletts’ as many of us called it, is because the house that overlooks the area was once owned and lived in by Miss Gwendoline Jellett. Miss Jellett, as I remember her, was an eccentric woman who drove a small red Massey Ferguson tractor (at speed), bred Hereford cattle and had two blind poodles.Miss Jellett was, as I remember, a kind lady who had a rich heritage and was very well educated. She passed away in 1985.

I have informed those close to me that they are calling this section of the Lee the incorrect name and that it is pronounced and called ‘Jelletts’   /Gel ettes/ and not Gillettes /jill ettes/.

This is really a very small thing and is only a rant by me or it might just be me being anxious that we remember one of the people whose family (The Leader’s) helped to create this village.

My real hope though is that young people continue to enjoy the riverbank  safely and resist the temptation of swimming in the waters there.

Corpus Christi

Crowds descended on Coachford last Sunday for the Annual Corpus Christi Procession. The procession was held in glorious sunshine and the village was looking its very best with flowers and statues adorning the windows and gardens of the businesses and houses along the route. Children from the parish that had recently received their Holy Communion walked in front of the blessed Sacrament and showered the route with flower petals. Men, women and children walked the route praying and singing on this sunny summers day  as they celebrated one of the very special traditions of Coachford Village and Aghabullogue parish. Fr. Peadar Murphy held aloft the processional monstrance as the  Blessed Sacrament was shown to all those along the route, from the Church to the eastern end of the village and westwards to the Grotto where devotions took place before returning to the Church. Boys and girls who had received their Confirmation in April were also involved as they carried the canopy. Great Credit is due to all those involved in preparing the Grotto each year for the procession. A huge thanks should also go to the choir/Folk group, Stewards, and those who help with installing the Public Address System and everyone else who help ensure the day runs off smoothly. Congratulations to all the residents and businesses along the route for making sure that the every place looked so beautiful in the Summer sunshine

52 yrs waiting for promised road improvements

The ACR Community Council met with Councillors Gobnait Moynihan, Michael Creed and Bob Ryan last week and  impressed upon them the urgent need for something to be done in relation to the appalling conditions of the roads in the parish and the footpaths ,or lack of, in Rylane and Coachford. The councillors pointed out to the Community Council members that there was a severe cut in funds over the last two years and that the winter flooding all over the county was also a huge drain on central funds. However the ACR members were quick to raise the lack of investment in the local  area as opposed to the huge road improvements in similar villages and communities nearby. The members were not asking for any preferential treatment for Aghabullogue Coachford and Rylane just to be treated fairly. It was pointed out to the councillors that letters were received from Cork County Council by residents and landowners in 1964 outlining plans to realign the R619  road from Coachford to Peake. 52 years on nothing has been done to improve this treacherous stretch of road. The Knockrour road came up as an example of a road that needs immediate attention. The council also asked the three councillors to keep the pressure on Irish Water to honour their commitment on developing the new Sewage treatment plant for Coachford Village. Concerns were also raised by those representing Coachford  of the unsafe speed that  cars were travelling through the village and asked that traffic calming measures be investigated for the main street in the village and by the GAA pitch as there were a lot of children in that area  and the Speed Van was only on duty intermittently.

Church Gate Collection

ACR Community Council will hold their Annual Church Gate Collection on this weekend in Aghabullogue Coachford And Rylane. Please give generously.

Foróige slips slides away.

Coachford Foróige enjoyed a tremendous day of Fun and Sun in West Cork last Sunday when they visited the West Cork Secret for their end of year getaway. 23 members headed off early  on an O’Callaghan’s Coach and arrived at their destination mid morning and set about  enjoying the obstacle course, team building exercises, kart racing, orienteering   and water slides all day in glorious weather. Everyone had a ball and were really well looked after by the people in the Kilbritain adventure centre.  The highlight of the day was the massive water slide where everyone sped down from a great height to enjoy being immersed in the cool, if not very clean water pond.

Sat Nav would advise tourists to avoid Coachford RoadsR619 peake

Visiting tourists to the Coachford area have been amazed at the poor condition of the roads in the Lee Valley area and in particular around the scenic areas of Coachford. One English couple thought they were on the wrong road as they headed for Mallow from Coachford. “ We have never ever experienced anything like this, the road surface is shocking and  unsafe for a major road. We would expect this road to be marked as a minor road not as a major Regional road and a route to Shannon Airport. It was so bad we were convinced we must have taken a wrong turn onto a side road although the Sat Nav was telling us we were correct. I think if the people who input these maps saw the condition of this road they would be advising tourists to avoid it. You never see these roads advertised when they ask you to come to Ireland or the Wild Atlantic Way and we can see why.” Locals and visiting anglers to the Greenway amenity have been voicing their concerns over the appalling surface of the roads leading to the internationally renowned fishing area that was supported by the Cork County Council.  “ The council helped put the amenity here and while everyone is grateful for it they seemed to have neglected the roads accessing the site. The road from Rooves Bridge to the Monument marking the Dripsey Ambush is in dire condition and needs immediate attention. Cork County Council  are supposed to be trying to attract tourists to the area not driving them away”,. said Peter  Dineen, local Community Council member.

 Soccer

The very exciting soccer season is drawing to a close. Coachford Under 17s have enjoyed a tremendous season and lie third in the table but have only one game left to play while those immediately above and below them have a good few games in hand but like anything points in the bag are very important at this stage of the league. Rylane Celtic are second in  their league with only three games to play and could be in line for promotion. However teams below them have games on hand but like Coachford Youths ,Rylane have the points already. The Coachford Premier team have five games left and are struggling this year, lying second from bottom at the moment and will need a good run in to the end of the season to secure their Premier league status.

Cork County Mayor AwardsRylane Boxing award

Congratulations to the Rylane Amateur Boxing Club who were one of 44 groups and individuals at last night’s Mayor of Cork County Awards held in the County Hall.

Rylane Amateur Boxing club was founded 37 years ago in response to a need for a facility where young men and boys from the area could come together and meet up outside of school and work. Rylane is a rural area and outside of the local GAA club based nine miles away there was very little for teenagers to do. One of the founding members, Dan Lane had experience in boxing  and was well aware of the huge benefits  of the sport and so it was decided that a club should be formed in the Mid Cork village.

On the first night 11 members joined and although there have been some lean years during  the last four decades the club has enjoyed an enormous level of success both inside and outside the ring. The club now boasts a very healthy 75 members. 70% of these are male and 30% female. From the humble beginnings of catering for boys from Rylane, the club now trains and offers support to children, young adults and men from all over North and Mid Cork, South limerick and Kerry. While the majority of the clubs members come from Rylane and surrounding villages of Donoughmore, Ballinagree and Coachford, many more are residents of Millstreet, Aubane, Banteer, Cill na Martra Rathmore and Dripsey. The club, one of only two rural  boxing clubs in the county is seen as an essential  outlet for young adults in the area. The boxers train in Rylane Hall which is slowly becoming a superb facility for the club boasting a boxing ring, punch bags, dressing rooms, Kit room and refreshment facilities. Rylane Amateur Boxing Club is embedded in the  local community and is viewed  as one of the most respected clubs in the locality.

Boxing  is a very disciplined sport and has always been seen as an outlet  for young people to help them let off a bit of steam while becoming extremely fit , disciplined and healthy. Due to the nature of the sport boxers are required to abide by the rules at all times, listen to their coaches, be mentally and physical fit and be prepared to take whatever is thrown at you and get up and go at it again. The lessons learned in the boxing ring can be used by young adults all through their lives and Rylane Amateur Boxing Club are preparing many boys and girls for life.

Rylane Amateur Boxing Club has worked extremely hard to become one of the best clubs in Cork, Munster and Ireland. its boxers have won over 20 All Ireland titles and in recent years the number of girls taking up and excelling in the sport has increased. The boxing club has organised  40 international tournaments and holds these in the neighbouring towns of Kanturk, Macroom  and Millstreet. The club organises  an annual international tournament between itself,  the New York Police Department and the New York Fire Department Boxing clubs in or around St. Patrick’s Day. Rylane Amateur Boxing club were also involved in helping Conor Counihan and the Cork Senior Football team train for the All Ireland title in 2009.

Rylane Amateur Boxing Club’s international tournaments have added to the local economy of the area due to the large number of overseas participants and supporters who have stayed in the area and returned to visit.

The Club has supported many charities in the area over the years and although always inneed of funds itself has always donated a large percentage of funds raised from various boxing tournaments to parish and community charity groups.

Rylane Amateur Boxing Club is much more than just a sports club. It is a vital part of the rural fabric of County Cork. It  offers an outlet for people of all ages to get physically active in an area where there are limited sports facilities. The boxing club is seen as  being an essential pillar of the community and the people of the region are extremely proud of it, its tradition and the great work it does with young boys and girls.

Rylane Amateur Boxing Club has grown from a small number of people winning national titles with limited facilities to becoming one of the most important and respected sporting organisations operating from a refubished old  hall in a rural part of Cork with modern equipment  and spreading its connections worldwide.

Rylane Amateur Boxing Club has ,and will always punch above its weight and we can count ourselves fortunate to have a group of people in our community who are totally committed to the sport and the young people who enjoy being part of it.
