Inniscarra Lake Development

The group behind the development of a permanent fishing and a walking area along the bank of the River Lee in Coachford held a public meeting on Monday night. A large crowd attended the briefing and members of the group outlined where the development of the project for the World Feeder fishing Championships in 2014 was at. Those in attendance were told that the group has resubmitted planning for the development outlining measures that the group has taken to comply with concerns, observations and objections to their first planning application. An ecological report has been carried out. Reports from a security consultant and An Garda Siochanna were also submitted. Traffic management plans for major competitions have also been addressed. Chairman Matt Sheehan said “The area has been visited by officials from the national Coarse Fishing federations from Italy, England and Holland this week. These people have come to the area to look at accommodation and the venue on behalf of their national teams for the World Championships. We would expect at least 35 teams to come for the championships; each of these countries could have up to 15 people traveling as part of the team. We are planning for an influx of over 500 people to the area for this event alone and the publicity from the World Championships will see this area being a permanent fixture on the European and world coarse angling map. I am confident that our planning application to Cork County Council with the additional information supplied will be successful and once that is granted we can move to the tendering phase of the development.”

Heritage group look back and look forward SONY DSC

THE ACR Heritage committee enjoyed reasonable weather last Sunday as Doug Lucey gave a very informative and entertaining talk on the Battle of Ard Ridre which took place in 1580. The talk painted the picture of the landscape and living conditions at the time and the political tensions that led to this skirmish in the Carrigathou/Aghavrin area which saw the death of 79 men and countless injured. The heritage group hopes to explore and give talks on many other areas around Coachford in the coming months. Community Council Chairman, Peter Dineen said, “ The way the group are bringing the heritage of our area to life is wonderful and offers us an insight into the way our relatives and ancestors lived in years gone by. It is also a valuable resource to those visiting the area and the heritage committee has ambitious plans to record the genealogy of the area. This week the Historic Graveyards project being carried out by members of the group is taking place in the old cemetery in Coachford. Genealogy is a huge tourist industry for our country and as recent as last week visitors from Australia stayed two nights in the area researching their ancestors, the Pynes of Clonmoyle and were helped in their investigations by members of the group. Over the coming years we may see many other visitors coming to the area to see where their relatives came from and the work being carried out by the Heritage committee through the Historic Graves project is a huge investment for the future of this industry.”

The 3rd game is a hugely important match for the club. A win means the lads go into the hat for the fourth round draw after playing three competitive games in quick succession however a loss would mean a second relegation final in two years.

Soccer team win unique double

Well done to the Killanardrish/Coachford Under 12 Soccer squad in winning the Division 4 league title and the Under 12 Cork Schoolboys Albert Coyne Cup. The boys worked hard all year winning every one of their 16 games throughout the season and scoring a massive tally of 96 goals and conceding only 12. The team coached by paddy Martin and managed by Liam Casey didn’t have it all their own way during the year as many of the team also featured in the club’s Under 13 league winning team and fatigue was a factor as the league entered its final few games but the lads dug deep and secured the clubs second Under 12 title in two years. The Coachford based team defeated Bandon Town by 9-0 in the final game of the season with Luke Casey, Adam Murphy, Jack Oldham, Jack Murphy, Mark Murphy and Elliot Lynch all scoring. In fact it was Elliot Lynch who was the Killanardrish/Coachford hero when the team won the Albert Conboyne Cup last weekend. Elliot who had earlier in the day bagged two gold medals in the Cork Special Olympics Championships scored the winning goal to defeat a gallant and sporting Glounthaune side.  Manager Liam Casey said “ What a season we’ve had, the boys were superb all year. You couldn’t ask for a more committed bunch of young fellas. They were always willing to listen and to try new things, they trained hard all year and they fully deserve this double. It was great to see some of the younger players  play their way onto the team. Add to this the success of the under 13s winning their league and the Under 15s gaining promotion the future certainly looks promising.”

The projects ranged from studying the freshwater life in our rivers to conducting water filtration experiments and visiting the water treatment plant in Inniscarra. The children got up close to a lot of the insects that inhabit our rivers and streams and had great fun learning all about water. The school held a special water day where the children dressed in blue and took part in many water based games and quizzes. At the presentation of the flag, talks on water conservation, the flooding of the Lee Valley and protecting our water supplies were given to the students. Well done to all involved in this excellent, worthwhile and educational project.

Cigarette Butts Hamper Litter ChallengeTity Towns

The Coachford Tidy Towns Committee have received the results of the first two rounds of the Cork County Council Litter Challenge and while the results in 2013 are much improved on 2012  a huge amount of marks have been lost due to the vast amount of Cigarette butts discarded along the streets of the village. John McCaffery, Chairman of the Tidy Towns said, “the results are very encouraging and shows that we are moving in the right direction at least. Last year our scores were in the mid 70s but this year already we have had a score of 88 on the first week and 92 in the second week but it’s the reckless discarding of the cigarette butts that is destroying our challenge. We are all well aware that having such a vibrant and busy village was always going to be difficult to keep clean but we have been putting in a huge effort and are reaping the rewards except for the cigarettes. We could pick up over 150 butts on a Monday night and come back again on Tuesday and find the same amount again thrown on the streets. For every 10 cigarette butts we lose one mark. In the first week of the challenge 20 butts were found on the day of inspection outside one shop and 40 butts outside a fast food takeaway. I would ask that all smokers be more conscious of where they discard their cigarette butts and litter. We are at the same time very grateful for the huge amount of effort that the business community and volunteers are putting in to the challenge of keeping our village tidy.” The third and final inspection period of the 2013 Litter challenge takes place from June 10th to June 19th.

Congratulations to Killanardrish/Coachford player Luke Casey on scoring two goals for the Cork Under 12 schoolboys soccer team in the All Ireland Final last Saturday. Cork were crowned all Ireland Champions after defeating Limerick side Limerick Desmond by 4-1. Casey opened the scoring for Cork after 5 minutes. Limerick Desmond rallied well and equalised after 13 minutes. A superb shot from Luke Casey on 25 minutes crashed off the underside of the crossbar but bounced out, leaving the score 1-1 at half time. Cork took the lead again after 38 minutes when Casey cut in from the left and slotted a great shot into the far corner for his, and Cork’s, second goal.  This was a superb performance by Casey and Cork to lift the All Ireland Schoolboys trophy.

Disappointment for under 15s

Kilanardrish Coachford lost 5-1 to Carrigtwohill in the Division 4 play off. The lads who were understrength played well and were hugely unlucky not to score three or four goals in the first half. Carrrigtwohill went ahead after 13 minutes against the run of play and doubled their lead on 27 minutes from a corner kick. Four minutes later Carrigtwohill pounced on a mistake by the local boys to make it 3-0 before the break. The Coachford based team refused to give up and started the second half strong however the East Cork side went 4-0 up after seven minutes but Coachford pulled one back and piled the pressure on for the remainder of the game but could not score another one and with only ten minutes left, Carrigtwohill made it 5 and were crowned champions. The score does not reflect how well Killanardrish/Coachford played and this game could have ended differently if some of those early misses had been converted and if there was a full side available to the management. A great season all the same for the boys who have gained promotion in a very competitive league.

HISTORIC WIN FOR CLUBSONY DSC

Congratulations to the Coachford AFC Premier team who won the Cork AUL Premier league title for the first time in the club’s history. The team managed and coached by Michael Walsh and Donal Moynihan created club history tonight by beating AOH Cup winners Killumney United by a single goal.

This last game of the season turned out to be the title decider as both teams were level on points. In the first half Coachford were under severe pressure as the physically stronger Killumney side had the wind advantage and piled long balls on top of the Coachford defence for long periods of the first half. On 15 minutes Coachford lost the influential player, Pa Finnegan to a hamstring injury. Coachford weathered the storm with some brilliant defending and had a few chances themselves at breaking the deadlock but really the first 45 minutes belonged to Killumney.
The second half began well for Coachford and with renewed confidence and the wind at their backs they began playing some beautiful football which has been their trademark all season.  Killumney were now the team having to defend and  face an ever increasing quick paced and determined Coachford side. Coachford lost captain Keith Linzell to a foot injury but then on 22 minutes Goalkeeper Peter O’Riordan collected a high ball and sent it quickly sown the field where it was collected, passed and rammed to the back of the Killumney goal to give the boys in green the lead. A frantic 28 minutes followed with many disputes, close shaves on both sides and a penalty miss for Coachford in the dying minutes of normal time. The referee added 5 minutes injury time but even that was not going to deny Coachford their first Premier league title since the club was founded in 1969. At the final whistle, players, coaching staff, substitutes, backroom staff, club members and many many supporters celebrated wildly
Club Chairman Thady Delaney said ” what a victory, this is huge for the club. They are a great bunch of players, every one of them. Welshie (Mick Walsh) and moyny (Donal Moynihan) had them well prepared and although the first half was tough going they always seemed to have enough to win this. We’ve had some tough times in our club and we’ve also enjoyed many good days but this has to be one of the best of them all. We’ve had a great year with the under 12s and 13s winning their leagues and the under 15s gaining promotion and now this. But all this success is on the back of huge amount of work right throughout the club and everyone can be proud of playing their part in tonight’s and all the other victories we’ve enjoyed this season”.
